Northern Keeps Top Spot In Girls Poll

You may have read it a few times by now, but Port Huron Northern is still on a tear right now.

The Huskies are proud owners of a nine-game win streak and are hopeful for win No. 10 on Wednesday, which will be the biggest of the season.

It feels like a year ago when the Huskies were 0-3 in the MAC Red, but they have since bounced back to take second place with a 8-3 record. However, if they top Romeo on the road Wednesday, they will tie Cousino for a share of the league title.

There’s no doubt that rattling off eight straight MAC Red wins is impressive. However, to Northern head coach Mark Dickinson, that winning streak was news to him after topping Cousino on Friday.

“We haven’t been counting,” Dickinson said. “I know we have a good run, but we still have work to do. We’re not counting … we want to give ourselves a chance to share with a really good team.”

While Northern is still hunting for a conference title, three area teams have already added those accolades to their season’s rèsumè.

Croswell-Lexington took the Blue Water Area Conference title in convincing fashion, Marlette claimed the Greater Thumb Conference East title and Marysville won its fifth-straight Macomb Area Conference title by winning the MAC Gold.

While Port Huron sits at 3-7 in the MAC White (7-11 overall), they will look to be surprising a few teams in the tournament. The Big Reds have been playing competitive, including a 46-18 walloping over Chippewa Valley.

With the talent they have, there’s no doubt they have a chance to make some noise in next week’s district tournament.
