Athlete of the Week: MaKayla LaVere leads Port Huron High to promising season

When MaKayla LaVere looks back on the past four years, she can’t help but smile.

The Port Huron High School senior cheerleader has spent the past four years working on her craft and also helping the Big Reds develop a program.

On Saturday, she competed in her final high school event, at the district tournament. Port Huron recorded its highest overall finish of sixth place and scored more than 700 points for the first time at a district competition.

Helping lead the way once more was LaVere, who was recently voted Times Herald Athlete of the Week by her peers.

“I hope the underclassmen keep striving to improve their skills and help improve the program as much as we have,” LaVere said. “We were low when I started as a freshman. We kept working and working and got stronger as a team.

“We became more of a family than a team and would help each other out. Leaving the program, I hope to see them continue achieving more and go to regionals and to states.”
