Athlete of the Week: Port Huron’s Finney displays elite speed
The following is an excerpt from an article written by Joseph Hayes, The Times Herald
Nijere Finney is blazing fast.
That’s not hard very to see. Throughout his sophomore track and field season, the Port Huron High School sprinter has blown away the competition.
He had a memorable regional meet a week ago, winning the Division 1, 100 dash (11.01) en route to being named the Times Herald Athlete of the Week.
Finney was voted as the Athlete of the Week despite a stiff challenge from Brian Butler and Kaia Scheffler of Marysville and Ashley Teltow of Richmond.
“He’s very respectful and will soak up everything you will tell him,” Port Huron High boys track coach Ray Brown said.
“He has great turnover. What I mean by that is he can start fast and also shift gears two or three times in a race.”
Finney was back on the award stand Friday night at the Blue Water Area Meet of Champions after winning the 100 (11:07) and as part of the Port Huron 400 relay team.
