Multiple Teams · Big Reds End Their Season With Loss To Rival PHN – But What A Season!

Five takeaways from Port Huron Northern’s 21-7 victory over Port Huron High

It was everything you would expect from a rivalry game featuring Port Huron and Port Huron Northern high schools.

The 51st meeting between the Big Reds and Huskies went right down to the wire in a defensive slugfest. Ultimately, Port Huron Northern was able to come away with a 21-7 victory to earn its first win over Port Huron since 2010.

Here are five takeaways from the Huskies’ victory over the Big Reds.

Big Reds dominate first quarter

The Big Reds received the ball first Friday and went on a long drive that spanned more than six minutes.

Helping the Big Reds stay on the field were three 15-yard penalties called on Port Huron Northern in the first quarter.

That helped the Big Reds gather themselves and they ultimately capitalized with an 8-yard touchdown run from Jonny Oriel.

Turnovers spring Huskies

The Big Reds led 7-0 entering the second quarter. But the Big Reds came undone with their own mistakes. They fumbled a kickoff and also threw an interception to Northern junior Siah Curry.

Each play was huge in the Huskies reestablishing themselves.

Theo Ellis then scored on a 2-yard run and, after Curry’s interception, Seth Klink found David Harris on a 5-yard pass to give Northern a 14-7 lead entering halftime.

Northern makes stand

As the third quarter began, each team attempted to take hold of the game. The Huskies’ defense proved key.

On two third-quarter possessions, the Huskies forced a turnover on downs in their own red zone. That allowed Northern to stay ahead of Port Huron 14-7 entering the final quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the defense would continue to make big plays to preserve the victory.

Huskies offense comes alive

Right when they needed it the most, the Huskies offense came alive. Sophomore quarterback Klink found Noah McNutt on a 16-yard reception midway through the fourth quarter.

Then, on the next two plays, Klink rushed for 40 yards, including a 24-yard touchdown run to give the Huskies a 21-7 lead.

With the score, the Huskies had a two-possession lead and Port Huron never closed the gap again.

Looking ahead

Port Huron Northern’s victory broke a six-game losing streak to Port Huron. The Huskies (8-1) have already qualified for postseason play. With Friday’s victory, they have a good chance of hosting a playoff game next week.

Port Huron ends the season 4-5, with a share of the Macomb Area Conference Blue Division title.
